1 Year On

What’s it like now?

It’s been 1 year since I had the first operation and the results are still amazing.

As someone who has never been able to see unaided, the novelty of waking up and being able to see without my glasses is still unbelievable. It really is incredible.

There are a couple of things that I have noticed now that the vision is settled.

  • It did take about 4 weeks for the swelling to go down on my eyelids
  • For the months following the recovery, I  very occasionally got floaters (the small black dots) but these seem to have gone now
  • My eyes are more sensitive to light as natural crystalline lenses have a filter, which the Artisan lenses don’t have
  • I can read things at a distance easily and I also have much more clarity

eyeThe change in my vision is amazing. I could see to an acceptable and safe level with my contacts, and I knew the operation would mean that I wouldn’t have to wear them, but I didn’t realise how much the Artisan lenses would actually improve my vision.

My distance vision now both eyes have recovered is so much better than it ever was with contacts. The change is huge.

Day to day I’m wearing reading glasses for computer work and reading. I may also get some for night time, distance viewing. I can see both without them, but when I’m focusing for long periods of time my eyes do get tired because they can no longer accommodate.

Interestingly, although both of my eyes are now fully corrected, my right eye is still dominant. The vision is slightly sharper than my left – I imagine that my brain is still getting using to using my left eye, as I previously had poorer vision on this side.

Before the operations I was 100% reliant on my glasses or contacts. My prescription 17/12/13 measured:

Right eye:
Sphere: -11.00
Cyl: -3.25
Axis: 160

Left eye:
Sphere: -11.00
Cyl: -1.25
Axis: 30

After both operations, as of 04/06/15, my prescription measures:

Right eye:
Sphere: +0.75
Cyl: -1.25
Axis: 115

Left eye:
Sphere: +1.00
Cyl: -1.25
Axis: 70

I can see better, I don’t have to worry about anyone knocking my lenses out, or me losing them – I have a sense of freedom and independence that I have never had when relying on glasses and contacts.

I can’t feel the Artisan lenses, so they are much more comfortable, I can swim without goggles, sleep without having to take contacts out and go out without feeling worried about contact lenses or glasses. The vision is incredible, and I should now have a stable prescription.

It’s amazing…
